Use the radian spatial convention θ3(z,τ)=∑neπin2τ+2inz and θ4(z,τ)=θ3(z+π/2,τ). Their ratio is unchanged by π and changes sign under πτ. The numerator has simple zeros at π(1+τ)/2+πZ+πτZ, while the denominator has simple zeros at πτ/2+πZ+πτZ. The two sets are disjoint, so any period must lie in πZ+πτZ, by translating the zero set. The sign rule then gives the displayed exact lattice. Squaring the ratio removes that sign and has precisely the smaller lattice πZ+πτZ.
