For a chain with lattice spacing b and N atoms, write xs=sb+us. The periodic normal-mode condition is uN=u0, equivalently xN=x0+Nb for unwrapped positions. The literal position condition xN=x0 is incompatible with the equilibrium xs=sb in that coordinate system. Fourier modes kr=2πr/(Nb) give ωr=2λ∣sin(krb/2)∣ for spring coefficient mλ2. The zero mode describes free center-of-mass translation and must be fixed or handled separately when defining an oscillator vacuum.
