For unit-variance innovations, orthogonality to the past gives
γν(h)=ϕνγν−1(h−1)(h≥1),Vν=ϕν2Vν−1+σν2.
(1)
Consequently ϕν=γν(1)/Vν−1 and σν2=Vν−γν(1)2/Vν−1. Replacing autocovariance by matched sample estimates yields seasonal regression estimators. The unit innovation variance is necessary to identify the noise scale separately.
