For a Reissner-Nordstrom black hole with ∣Q∣≤M, the outer unstable circular null geodesic has radius rph=(3M+9M2−8Q2)/2. Maximizing f/r2 for f=1−2M/r+Q2/r2 gives the critical impact parameter bc2=rph2/f(rph)=2rph3/(rph−M). The geometrical optics capture cross-section is πbc2, reducing to 27πM2 in Schwarzschild spacetime and 16πM2 in the extremal charged case. Finite-wavelength absorption need not equal this geometric limit.
