For a mean-field dynamo with uniform alpha, shear πV/d, diffusivity η>0 and fixed vertical wavenumber π/d, a horizontal Fourier mode obeys (s+η(k2+π2/d2))2=iαπVk/d. With D=αVd2/(π2η2) and h=∣k∣d/π, the growing branch has positive real part exactly when ∣D∣>2(1+h2)2/h. Differentiation gives 3h4+2h2−1=0, hence h=1/3. Equality is a neutral oscillation, not exponential growth. The sign of D reverses wave propagation without changing the growth threshold.
