For an admissible Fourier fluid Lagrangian displacement ξ(r)eimθ+ikz, put D⊥=(rξr)′/r+imξθ/r and D=D⊥+ikξz. Force balance cancels every magnetic-field-gradient cross term in the magnetohydrodynamic energy principle, leaving an integrand γp∣D∣2+B2[∣D⊥∣2+k2(∣ξr∣2+∣ξθ∣2)]/(4π). For p≥0, γ>0, this is nonnegative. Neutral displacements can exist, so stability here means absence of negative-energy exponentially growing ideal modes, not strictly positive energy for every displacement.
