With renormalized Dirac fields, the coefficient of −ψˉψ in the counterterm Lagrangian is δmL=Z2m0−m, whereas the bare-parameter shift is m0−m=δmL−mδZ2 at first order. In Feynman gauge and d=4−ϵ, QED has δZ2=−e2/(8π2ϵ) and δmL=−4me2/(8π2ϵ). Their difference gives m0−m=−3me2/(8π2ϵ). Defining the insertion and the mass coefficient before quoting its sign avoids confusing these two counterterms.
