For ω=e2πi/p and the Legendre symbol χ, the quadratic Gauss sum is
G(χ)=∑a=1p−1χ(a)ωa.
(1)
It equals p for p≡1(mod4) and ip for p≡3(mod4) with the standard choice of square root.

Quadratic Gauss sum
If Q and N are the nonzero square and nonsquare classes modulo eleven and ω=e2πi/11, then
∑q∈Qωq=2−1+i11,∑n∈Nωn=2−1−i11.
(1)
Their sum is −1, and their difference is the Quadratic Gauss sum i11.
