Quasi-geostrophic vertical mode (QG vertical mode)

A quasi-geostrophic vertical mode separates horizontal and vertical dependence of the streamfunction. With rigid horizontal boundaries and constant stratification, the vertical eigenfunctions are $\cos (n\pi z/H)$.
