William Wootters Created 2026-10-24 Updated 2026-11-05
A theoretical physicist who, with Scott Hill, developed a calculable measure of quantum entanglement for pairs of qubits. Their 1997 work introduced the concurrence approach and obtained an exact preparation-cost formula for mixed states of rank at most two, with evidence for a broader extension. This turned an optimization over pure-state decompositions into a practical calculation for an important class of small quantum systems.[ref]

W state 2026-10-14
The -qubit W state is the Dicke state with one excitation:For three qubits it is . Its reduced density matrix on any one qubit is , from the Dicke state recursion. For both diagonal entries are nonzero, so that qubit is entangled with the rest: a pure product state would have a pure marginal. A symmetric-arm reduction of an exchange Hamiltonian supplies a dynamical preparation from one initial excitation.
XY exchange interaction Created 2026-10-14 Updated 2026-11-05
The isotropic XY exchange interaction between two qubits is . Its action isIndeed, , , , and . The two terms cancel on equal bits and add on unequal bits. Thus a network Hamiltonian operator preserves excitation number; in the single-excitation subspace, it is the weighted adjacency matrix, moving an excitation from to with hopping coefficient .

Zurek spin-bath model Created 2026-10-07 Updated 2026-11-05
A device qubit couples diagonally to a finite bath of spins. Conditional bath states acquire opposite phase rotations, and their conditional environment overlap multiplies the device coherence. An initially aligned bath leaves the overlap's modulus at one. Initially equatorial spins yield . Global unitary time evolution remains reversible, and a finite spin-bath coherence recurrence prevents a strict zero long-time limit at finite bath size.
