For radial motion between turning radii r− and r+ in a central potential, the radial action per unit mass is
Jr=π1∫r−r+2[E−Φ(r)]−r2L2dr.
(1)
It vanishes on a circular orbit and is canonically conjugate to the radial angle.

Radial action
For a bound Kepler orbit of semimajor axis a around mass M,
Jr+L=GMa.
(1)
Adiabatic central-mass change therefore preserves Ma and orbital eccentricity.
