For a spherically symmetric field u(r,t) in three dimensions,
∇2u=r21∂r∂(r2ur)=r1∂r2∂2(ru).
(1)
Thus the heat equation becomes ut=Dr−1(ru)rr. Introducing w=ru reduces its spatial part to the one-dimensional second derivative wrr, while regularity at the centre requires w(0,t)=0.
