The displayed logarithmic derivative compares the loss and production flux sensitivities of species i to the mean amount μj. At a steady state vi+=vi−=vi, it converts the normalized negative drift Jacobian into Mij=Hij/τi, where τi=μi/vi is the mean molecular lifetime. For constant production and loss proportional to μα, the scalar elasticity is H=α.
