If fragments are injected with number spectrum SN(D)∝D−αr and escape faster than they collide, steady balance gives n(D)=SN(D)ty(D). Thus ty∝Dγ changes the differential number index to αr−γ. A removed population with size-independent subsequent lifetime retains the source index αr.
