Stability matrix of a renormalization-group fixed point Created 2026-09-24 Updated 2026-09-28
The stability matrix is the Jacobian of the beta functions at a renormalization-group fixed point. Its eigenvalues classify perturbations as relevant, irrelevant, or marginal.
With , the one-loop renormalization-group beta function is . For and , its two nonnegative renormalization-group fixed points are zero and . Differentiating the beta function gives the displayed thermal eigenvalues, so the nonzero point has correlation-length critical exponent to leading order. At the zero eigenvalue requires nonlinear analysis: is marginally relevant for , but the perturbative spin-wave theory has a line of fixed points and omits vortices.
Thermodynamic critical point Created 2026-10-07 Updated 2026-10-14
At an ordinary thermodynamic critical point, two coexisting phases become indistinguishable: their order parameter difference vanishes, and the correlation length and appropriate response functions typically diverge. A continuous phase transition can be approached there by tuning the thermal and conjugate-field variables. A renormalization-group fixed point controls its singular long-distance behavior. A triple point with three separated minima is not an ordinary thermodynamic critical point, and a tricritical point requires an additional tuning and has a different scaling theory.
