For an irreducible complex character χ of a finite group G and subgroup H, write its restriction as ∑idiψi. Orthogonality gives ∑idi2=∣H∣−1∑h∈H∣χ(h)∣2≤∣G∣/∣H∣, because ∣G∣−1∑G∣χ∣2=1. Equality holds exactly when χ vanishes outside H, since the omitted sum consists of nonnegative terms.
