Absorption that decreases with increasing illumination intensity as the absorber's population distribution changes. It can provide an intensity-dependent loss for passive Q-switching.
An element whose transmission increases as its absorption saturates. In a passive Q-switched laser it initially blocks oscillation, then becomes more transparent when the growing intracavity field bleaches the loss.
