For physical density ρˉi and conformal time, H=a′/a=aH. Substitution into the definition Ωi=8πGρˉi/(3H2) gives the displayed formula. Omitting a2 gives Ωi/a2, which need not equal one even in a spatially flat matter-only universe. In particular, the conformal growth source 23H2Ωm equals 4πGa2ρˉm with the physical density parameter.
