For a complete discrete valuation ring R, let f(a1)∈(π) and let f′(a1) be a unit. If f(an)∈(πn), choose c modulo π solving f(an)/πn+cf′(an)≡0 and put an+1=an+cπn. Taylor expansion gives f(an+1)∈(πn+1). The sequence is Cauchy and its limit is a root. If two roots lift the same residue, factoring f(x)−f(y) leaves x−y times a unit, proving uniqueness.
