For ϕ=Acos(q0​z), the gradient-quartic Brazovskii model has volume-averaged free-energy density
f(A)=4a−ac​​A2+8Bq02​​A4,q02​=−2γκ​,ac​=4γκ2​.

The averages are ⟨cos2⟩=⟨sin2⟩=1/2 and ⟨cos2sin2⟩=1/8. For B>0, the stable amplitude is zero for a≥ac​ and satisfies A2=(ac​−a)/(Bq02​) below it. The mean-field approximation therefore predicts a continuous phase transition.
