For an isothermal thin atmosphere with number density n(z)=n0e−z/H and extinction cross-section σλ, a tangent ray near radius Rp+z has height z+ℓ2/(2Rp) at distance ℓ along the ray. The resulting Gaussian integral gives slant optical depth
τλ(z)≃σλn(z)2πRpH.

The effective transit height is near τλ∼1, so z(λ)=Hlogσλ+constant if composition is constant. This explains the scattering slope of a transmission spectrum.
