For nonsquare N>1, write the complete quotients after the initial term as (N+m)/d. They exceed one, while their algebraic conjugates lie between minus one and zero. Thus d<N+m<2N. Comparing coefficients in N=(pkαk+1+pk−1)/(qkαk+1+qk−1) gives pk2−Nqk2=dk+1(pkqk−1−qkpk−1), and the last determinant has absolute value one. These small residues are useful candidates for smooth numbers in congruence-of-squares factorization.
