At speed v≪c, an endpoint separation L measured simultaneously in its own rest frame becomes L1−v2/c2 in the moving frame, shorter by approximately Lv2/(2c2). The stable evaluation Lβ2/[1+1−β2] avoids subtracting nearly equal floating-point numbers.
