For two Grassmann spin components, j=ψˉ​σψ satisfies j2=−6ψˉ​↑​ψˉ​↓​ψ↓​ψ↑​. A real vector auxiliary field with cost M2/(2U) and coupling −M⋅j therefore reproduces the repulsive 3U contact action. All three spin components are essential to that normalization.
