The split-step Fourier method alternates local phase accumulation with free diffraction. For Ex=(D+S)E over a step Δx, Lie-Trotter splitting gives
E(x+Δx)≃eΔxDeΔxSE(x),

and a transverse Fourier transform applies the constant-coefficient diffraction exponential efficiently.
