Rapid contraction of a stellar core when its pressure support becomes inadequate. An evolved iron-group core can lose support through electron capture and photodisintegration and collapse towards a neutron star or black hole. A successful outgoing explosion produces a core-collapse supernova; core collapse need not always give a bright successful supernova.
