Primary 2002 paper by Malcolm C. Smith, IEEE Transactions on Automatic Control47(10), 1648–1662. Abstract and pp1648–1651 introduce the ideal two-terminal inerter and mechanical realizations; the physical examples use rotational inertia and transmission geometry. University-hosted PDF is indexed but direct reader retrieval timed out; the abstract and indexed realization passages were verified.
