Filter a fixed local term using a nested sequence of neighbourhood Hamiltonians Hs, and call the results Gs. The differences Gs−Gs−1 give a shell decomposition. When H0=hZ and HD=H, normalization gives G0=hZ and telescoping gives gZ=hZ+∑s=1D(Gs−Gs−1). Individual shell terms need not commute with the full ground projector.
