For a polytrope of index one with ρ(r)=ρcsin(πr/R)/(πr/R) and fully ionized hydrogen, Thomson scattering gives the central mean free path L=mp/(σTρc). At small depth Δ=R−r, ℓ≃LR/Δ and the radial optical depth is τ≃Δ2/(2LR). Thus ℓ=Δ gives Δ=LR whereas τ=1 gives Δ=2LR. Neither condition by itself guarantees thermalization.
