Tomas Riedel is a researcher in the interactions of blood proteins with surfaces. His 2011 study with collaborators investigated how adsorption changes fibrinogen cleavage during fibrin formation; the paper lists his affiliation at the Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion in Prague.[ref]
The experiment compared dissolved fibrinogen with preparations adsorbed on polystyrene surfaces. After adding thrombin, the investigators collected released fibrinopeptides and measured them by high-performance liquid chromatography. Surface-bound preparations released Fibrinopeptide B without the characteristic delay seen in solution, and some released more Fibrinopeptide B than Fibrinopeptide A.[ref]
Fibrinopeptides A and B release in the process of surface fibrin formation by Tomas Riedel and others. Methods: sample preparation and HPLC; Abstract and Figures4–5
For example, two preparations containing the same protein can behave differently if one presents the molecule at a surface. The result makes molecular presentation part of the explanation of enzyme access and cleavage. It cautions against transferring a solution-phase reaction sequence unchanged to every surface-bound preparation.
