For a planar polymer with N segments of length ℓ, approximate its coil free energy by F/(kBT)∼R2/(Nℓ2)+v2N2/R2. The first term is the entropic stretching cost of an ideal chain, while v2 is an excluded-area coefficient. Minimizing gives R4∼v2ℓ2N3 and size exponent ν=3/4. For v2∼ℓ2, this becomes R∼ℓN3/4. A parameter multiplying N2/R2 must carry area units; using an unsquared segment length there would be dimensionally inconsistent.
