For two orthonormal energy eigenstates ψ1,ψ2, let an observable have distinct nondegenerate eigenstates ϕ±=(ψ1±ψ2)/2. Starting in ϕ−, unitary time evolution gives (e−iE1t/ℏψ1−e−iE2t/ℏψ2)/2. Its probability amplitude along ϕ+ is (e−iE1t/ℏ−e−iE2t/ℏ)/2. The Born rule therefore gives the stated transition probability. The energy difference determines the oscillation frequency, while a common energy shift has no effect.
