The boundary four-form is Θ=Tr[δA(FA+AF−21A3)]. To derive the identity, put B=dA and a=δA. The variations of the three polynomial terms in Q5 are respectively 3Tr(aB2)+dTr[a(BA+AB)], 3Tr[a(A2B+BA2)]+23dTr(aA3), and 3Tr(aA4). Their sum gives the identity because F=B+A2. For variations in a Lie algebra with basis Tα, the bulk field equations are Tr(TαF2)=0, not necessarily the unprojected matrix equation F2=0. Conjugation of both the Lie algebra and the gauge curvature proves covariance of these equations under Yang-Mills gauge transformations.
