In signature (+−−−), the matter action S=∫−g[p(ϵ)+n((∇χ)2−ϵ2)/(2ϵ)] uses independent n,ϵ,χ. Variations of n,ϵ,χ give (∇χ)2=ϵ2, p′(ϵ)=n, and particle number conservation in a relativistic fluid for ua=∇aχ/ϵ. Its Hilbert stress-energy tensor is Tab=(ρ+p)uaub−pgab. The action describes isentropic potential flow, with vanishing canonical vorticity of a relativistic fluid, rather than every vortical perfect-fluid solution.
