Zero-composition subspaces of a linear map (Ml(α)={β:βα=0},Mr(α)={β:αβ=0})

For α:U→V, maps in Ml(α) factor uniquely through V/imα; maps in Mr(α) have image in kerα. Thus these vector subspaces are naturally L(V/imα,U) and L(V,kerα), of dimensions (dimV−rankα)dimU and (dimU−rankα)dimV. Passing to a dual map reverses composition and interchanges these two spaces. This gives a basis-free route to equality of the ranks of a map and its dual.
