Beam cooling reduces random deviations around a beam's reference motion, such as its momentum spread and transverse spread. A highly energetic beam can be cool in this sense: its large common directed kinetic energy is distinct from the spread. Concentrating the occupied phase space helps accumulated particles fit the next machine's acceptance. Stochastic cooling achieves this through measured beam fluctuations and feedback control.
