Karl Weierstrass developed rigorous methods in analysis and the theory of functions. Precise limit arguments and power-series methods helped distinguish intuition about a curve from the hypotheses needed for a theorem. The Weierstrass approximation theorem shows that polynomials can approximate arbitrary continuous functions uniformly on a compact real interval.[ref]
