Norm of an integral element over a normal domain
ID: norm-of-an-integral-element-over-a-normal-domain
Let be an integrally closed domain with fraction field , and let be finite. If is an integral element over , its monic minimal polynomial lies in : its roots are integral, so its coefficients are integral elements of , hence belong to . If that polynomial has degree and constant coefficient , then . This remains true for inseparable extensions. An infinite algebraic extension has no usual determinant field norm.
