 Stiffness matrix

The stiffness matrix represents a variational bilinear form $a$ in a finite element basis. A symmetric coercive bilinear form gives a positive-definite matrix. Local support of the piecewise-linear hat functions produces a sparse matrix, allowing efficient numerical solution.
