Stone–Čech compactification
ID: stone-cech-compactification
For a completely regular Hausdorff space, the Stone-Čech compactification is the weak-star closure of the evaluation functionals in the dual unit ball of . The Banach-Alaoglu theorem gives compactness; complete regularity makes evaluation a topological embedding. Every bounded real continuous function extends by , yielding an isometric isomorphism . For a continuous map into a compact Hausdorff space , the adjoint of pullback sends this closure into the closed evaluation copy of , yielding the unique continuous extension. Uniqueness follows from density. It is a universal compactification, not a homeomorphism between and the whole dual space.
The Stone–Čech compactification is a mathematical concept in topology that extends a topological space to a compact space in a way that retains certain properties of the original space. It is named after mathematicians Marshall Stone and Eduard Čech. ### Definition Let \( X \) be a completely regular topological space.
