A thylakoid is a flattened membrane-bounded compartment. In a chloroplast, its membrane contains the machinery for light-dependent reactions, including chlorophyll. Stacks of thylakoids pack membrane area into a small space within the chloroplast; the light-dependent reactions schematic simplifies this architecture.
