Tidal dissipation converts mechanical energy associated with a time-varying tidal deformation into heat. It can circularize an eccentric orbit, synchronize spin, and contribute deep planetary heating. A perfectly synchronized circular orbit with no additional forcing need not sustain substantial tidal heating.
