For two thin lenses in contact, achromatism requires Φ1/V1+Φ2/V2=0, where Vi are their Abbe numbers. With total power Φ=1/f, the component powers are Φ1=ΦV1/(V1−V2) and Φ2=−ΦV2/(V1−V2). A positive doublet using a larger-V crown glass element and smaller-V flint glass element therefore uses a converging crown and a diverging flint.
