Coupling a charged condensate's phase to electromagnetism changes the neutral Goldstone response into electromagnetic collective dynamics. In a bulk long-wavelength regime, the longitudinal phase-density mode has a plasma gap. Its dispersion and damping require a dynamical model; a static Ginzburg-Landau functional alone does not fix the entire excitation spectrum.
A lossless low-energy charged-condensate action has a positive compressibility coefficient , effective pair density , mass and signed charge . Coupling its phase to the electromagnetic potentials through the displayed combinations preserves gauge symmetry. Adding the Maxwell action and eliminating the longitudinal electric potential gives in a simple homogeneous bulk model. Removing the electromagnetic coupling leaves neutral sound. Static Ginzburg-Landau theory of superconductivity alone cannot determine these frequencies or their damping. [ref]
