For a character of an algebra φ on a complex unital Banach algebra, φ(1)=1 and φ(a)∈σ(a), so ∣φ(a)∣≤∥a∥ without any prior continuity assumption. Under the usual normalization ∥1∥=1, this gives ∥φ∥=1; for an unnormalized algebra norm, only the upper bound is automatic.
