For a symmetric top with axial unit vector e and angular velocity ω, the classical axial spin is the scalar n=ω⋅e. The identity e˙=ω×e implies ω=e×e˙+ne. If the transverse and axial principal moments of inertia are A and C, then the angular momentum about the fixed vertex is L=Ae×e˙+Cne. A torque perpendicular to e conserves n. During steady precession at rate Ω and inclination α, the general angular velocity is Ωk+(n−Ωcosα)e; the precession rate by itself does not fix n.
