For a cylinder of uniform mass density ρ, length L, inner radius Ri and outer radius Ro, an annular element has dm=2πρLrdr. Thus the axial moment of inertia is I=∫r2dm=πρL(Ro4−Ri4)/2. Dividing by M=πρL(Ro2−Ri2) yields the displayed result. At fixed mass, the solid-cylinder limit is MRo2/2 and the thin-shell limit is MR2.
