An experimental condensed matter physicist who developed inelastic neutron scattering as a probe of excitations in matter. Measuring both the energy and direction of scattered neutrons reveals energy and momentum transferred to a sample. The method turns lattice vibrations and other collective motions into a measurable excitation spectrum.[ref]
