For fixed meridional wavenumber and deformation radius, differentiating ω=Uk−βk/(k2+l2+Ld−2) gives cgx=U+β(k2−l2−Ld−2)/(k2+l2+Ld−2)2. A localized packet uses this velocity rather than ω/k. For l=0 its intrinsic sign changes at ∣k∣Ld=1.
