If E∣X∣<∞, the characteristic function ϕ(u)=EeiuX satisfies ϕ′(0)=iEX. The bound ∣(eiuX−1)/u∣≤∣X∣ and the dominated convergence theorem justify differentiation at zero. For mean zero, ψ(u)=∣1−ϕ(u)∣/∣u∣ extends continuously by ψ(0)=0, and ∣1−ϕ(u)n∣≤n∣u∣ψ(u) by a finite geometric series. This supplies a direct characteristic-function proof of the weak law of large numbers.
